At the 17th China Information Accessibility Forum held on July 28, Alibaba, China Braille Library and Zhejiang University jointly launched “Light Reading Plan 2.0”, which will help groups visually impaired people to make better use of cultural services.
At present, there are more than 17 million visually impaired people in China. In December 2020, the three parties jointly released the “Light Reading Plan”, which includes donating Tmall Genie smart speakers to the visually impaired, launching barrier-free cinemas on the Youku video platform, and exporting optical character recognition technology. After a year and a half, the three parties jointly launched version 2.0 of the plan.
China Braille Library is an important government institution that provides public cultural services to blind people. Ali Baba Cloud will provide free storage and computing resources for the library’s cultural resources, such as barrier-free audiobooks, e-books and movies, to facilitate the online use of visually impaired people.
Considering the inconvenience for visually impaired people to borrow and return physical books designed for them, Cainiao Network, a logistics platform owned by Alibabaprovides free door-to-door delivery service and fulfills barrier-free orders with state-of-the-art technology.
The Light Reading Plan 2.0 will also promote the inclusive application of digital technology among visually impaired groups. Zhejiang University Innovation Software Technology Development Center Blind Help Team Partnered with AlibabaDAMO Academy to make a big breakthrough in Braille translation using digital technologies such as Braille Recognition, Braille Formula Recognition and Braille Table Recognition. They also developed an intelligent assistant system for teaching Braille, which can translate Braille text into Chinese to improve the efficiency of designing and marking exam papers.

Additionally, Alibaba will work with Zhejiang University to promote the large-scale use of barrier-free compliance testing systems for Internet industry applications. This system combines artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, cloud edge synergy and other technologies, which can automatically detect the accessibility level of mobile applications with high accuracy.
