Saturday driveway shooting in East Birmingham council housing community leaves 1 dead

A Saturday afternoon shooting in a council housing community in east Birmingham left one person dead.

East sector officers were dispatched at 4.40pm to report gunfire in the 7500 block of 66th Court Way South in Gate City. Once at the scene, they found the unconscious victim in an alley, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Officers applied pressure to the victim’s injuries until the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service arrived. They transported him to UAB Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Fitzgerald said Shot Spotter recorded at least 10 shots and police found numerous casings.

The shooter(s) fled before police arrived on the scene. No arrests were made.

Fitzgerald said investigators do not yet know what led to the fatal shooting. They also did not confirm if the victim was a resident of Gate City.

The victim is Birmingham’s 61st homicide so far this year. Of these, five were found to be justifiable and therefore not considered criminal.

Across Jefferson County, there have been 79 homicides, including the 61 in Birmingham.

Fitzgerald said investigators need anyone who may have seen or heard the altercation to call homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
