HAWTHORNE, Fla. (WCJB) – After 10 years as mayor of Hawthorne, Matt Surrency has handed over the keys to the city. He was appointed in 2011 and succeeded the late Kit Randall. Surrency now returns the title of “Mayor of Hawthorne” to the Randall family as Kit’s daughter Jacquelyn Randall takes over the post.

“I am pleased to connect his mother, Mayor Kit Randall, his tenure with his tenure. I am delighted to see her take over. I know her mom would be very proud of her and what she does, ”said Matt Surrency.

This passing of the torch is unique because it marks the loop of two legacies.

“It’s a great honor. A huge responsibility. I take this very seriously. I will do as I have done, even with the appointment of a simple commissioner. It’s no different for me. My heart is still the same. My tasks and assignments will always be the same, ”explained Jacquelyn Randall. “It’s about doing what’s best for the residents of Hawthorne. “

She’s ready to get down to business.

“I love my city. I can’t wait to see what we can do as a team and how I can be the leader of this great team,” said Randall.

Surrency expects Randall to be very successful in his new role.

“Mayor Randall, she’s going to do a great job. She is a friend; even before joining the commission, I saw it grow. I know his family very well. His mother inspired me for the commission. I think she’s going to do a great job, and we’re going to have a great commission, ”Surrency said.

As she steps into her new role, Randall said she will continue to prioritize things that matter, including grants.

“Housing is one of the most important things here for Hawthorne. We lack mixed housing for our residents here in Hawthorne. So you still have our educational piece. It’s not about being important. We were just faced with the loss of our school not so long ago. We want to keep this a priority and keep moving forward and continue to give him the support he needs to be successful, ”explained Randall.

His priority is simple: “I will always have Hawthorne at the center of my decision-making. “

Surrency will remain a member of the commission and explained, “A few things will change. I will have a little more free time. “
