The World Federation of Trade Unions [WFTU] International Union of Public Services and Allies [TUI PS & A] representing more than 30 million members of the civil service, take this opportunity to affirm our solidarity and unwavering support for the thousands of demands of teachers in Pakistan represented by the âPakistan Teachers Federation (PTF)â.
Teachers protest against the government’s refusal of teachers to receive the rent allowance, as agreed by the government and associations in 2017. Teachers, like other civil servants, have the right to housing and to decent shelter. It is these teachers and other workers in schools and educational institutions who have ensured that learning and teaching continues in our schools during this devastating COVID-19 pandemic, working in most cases without Adequate PPE.
We fully support the struggles of Pakistani workers in the education system. Pakistani teachers are denied the right to form unions as a result of which these workers are denied their universal rights, including the rights to strike and collective bargaining. We condemn these neoliberal policies of the Pakistani government which are old and outdated and belong in the trash. We consider this to be a serious violation of ILO conventions.
These demands also exposed the long suffering and neglect of teachers by the government, where teachers can only afford to rent and cannot afford to buy suitable accommodation for their families.
The WFTU-TUI-PS & A therefore demands that the Pakistani government listen to the demands of teachers and implement the 2017 salary agreement signed with the teachers.
We call on all of our members around the world, especially in our Asia-Pacific region, to engage in solidarity with all teachers and education workers in Pakistan so that the government can respond positively to their demands.
